How the predictor works

The rank rules, labels and quota logic behind every prediction.

What the predictor does

College Predictor compares the ranks you enter with the official JoSAA 2026 Round 5 opening and closing ranks for every NIT seat you are eligible for. Each seat that your rank can plausibly reach is shown, with a label for how likely it is.

Which rank is used for which seat

Seat typeRank used
OPENCommon Rank List (CRL) rank
EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, STYour rank within that category
OPEN (PwD)Your CRL-PwD rank
EWS / OBC-NCL / SC / ST (PwD)Your PwD rank within that category

This follows the note printed on the JoSAA opening and closing rank page: OPEN uses CRL, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST use category ranks, and PwD seats use PwD ranks within the respective categories. Students in a reserved category can also compete for OPEN seats, so enter your CRL as well to include them.

Safe, Moderate and Dream

  • Safe: your rank is at or better than the Round 5 closing rank of the seat.
  • Moderate: your rank is up to 15% beyond the Round 5 closing rank.
  • Dream: your rank is up to 30% beyond the Round 5 closing rank.

Closing ranks can still move in the last rounds, which is why seats slightly beyond the Round 5 closing rank can still be allotted. These bands are a practical guide, not a rule published by JoSAA.

Seat eligibility rules applied

  • Home State (HS): shown only at the NIT located in your home state.
  • Other State (OS): shown at NITs outside your home state.
  • Special quotas: Goa quota at NIT Goa, and Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh quotas at NIT Srinagar, shown only to eligible candidates.
  • Female-only seats: shown only if you select Female. These include supernumerary seats.
  • PwD seats: shown only if you tick the PwD box and enter your PwD rank.

Limits you should know

  • Round 5 data for NITs and IIEST Shibpur is used. Seats missing from our Round 5 data show their Round 5 rank, marked †. Rounds after 5 are not included.
  • Cutoffs depend on the number of seats, candidate choices and withdrawals each year. A past cutoff does not guarantee a future seat.
  • The tool does not model your choice-filling order or seat freezing and sliding decisions.
